The question and answer session with John Carmack from QuakeCon 2011 is now online - it's a little more accessible to those of us that don't have advanced degrees in hyperbolic topology (n-hey) so is worth a watch if you want to hear Carmack brain dumping on a variety of topics.
Some of the interesting points:
- while Rage won't initially have dedicated servers, it is possible that it might get them later
- dedicated servers will be a must-have in future id games
- voxel engines are something he's spent a lot of time looking at, but it sounds like he still thinks polygons are the way to go
- Quake Live isn't making money now and they're not looking at future free/ad-funded games
- outside of games, Carmack's rocketeering enterprise Armadillo Aerospace has actually been making money doing government contracts, but Carmack is worried that is holding them back, so they're going to stop doing that and he's simply going to fund their research.

Because everyone else, specifically S3 and then later Rendition and 3Dfx, went with Polygons and, as a result, texels, they had to go that way with all their future products, as it was a bit like asking people to write for both Glide and OpenGL, whereas NV1s Direct3D support was slow and buggy.
I'll be keen to see how the industry goes now that we're all on CUDA which handles voxels just lovely.
