Over on Kotaku they are reporting that some older model (fat ones) PS3s are being rendered next to useless.
- Unable to go online - No trophy support - No games booting at all No real solid info on what is causing this but according to the comments there seems to be an issue with the clock as many people have noticed their PS3 clock has reset back to 1/1/2000. This could mean the console thinks it's a leap year when it isn't and thus is flipping out over the date but who knows. Since my controller has broken (stupid f*****g thing) I can't test if I have this bug or not but some people have said that resetting the clock back to normal fixes this for them, others have done entire system resets and that works so guess until there is an official fix it doesn't look good for us users. Long as they fix this issue before the 9th i'll be happy. I have 3 games that need to be played this month. EDIT - After reading a bit more there are rumors of the PSN being hacked, and that sony may take up to a WEEK to roll out a firmware update that MAY fix this. UPDATE - Taken from here "After calling Sony's technical support and speaking to one of their representatives, we were told the issue would be fixed by morning and that there is no need to fear about game's trophies or save data, so it's safe to assume these will be fine once the problem is taken care of. It sounds like the fix will be made relatively soon and that there won't be any ill side-effects from the bug. What time the fix will go up exactly is yet to be determined" Good news perhaps |
i have a fat ps3 purchased about 6 months after release, not yet having any problems.
|
Yeah, it's issues with the PSN. I use all of my PS3 for all of my media streaming, but I think I'll be using the proxy server in the lounge tonight. I don't want to turn on my PS3 and put it in a world of hurt.
|
yeah, I turned it on, it auto loggedin then logged out with error message :( Rookie mistake.
They better have it fixed by the BFBC2 launch or peeps are gonna be PISSED |
I thought the point of consoles was that they "just work"?
|
We'll know tomorrow when we wake up if this is 1 of those 24 hour bugs-of-temporary-doom or not. Hoping this is the case because last thing I want to do is send my PS3 back to sony, since I JUST got the f*****g thing fixed.
|
EDIT - After reading a bit more there are rumors of the PSN being hacked, I really hope that means people are playing PS3 games on their PC over the PSN and owning all the console newbs. That would be hilarious for 2 reasons, 1) LOL console and 2) LOL sony. |
Mine is having that exact problem, i cant do anything, no games load up.
|
I'm so glad that I finished Heavy Rain over the weekend!
I've just powered up my PS3 and my date is stuffed, so obviously I have zee bug! |
I'm hoping I have appeased the problem gods as I have had to deal with a broken blu-ray drive and a f***ed controller which refuses to work. Perhaps this will protect me from the bug. Will know tomorrow when my new controller arrives.
|
Just letting you guys know that my x360 is working fine.
ttyl |
mines working fine, but its not connected to the net.
|
Just letting you guys know that my x360 is working fine So is mine. I just prefer PS3 |
Yep it is broke, but appears to be ok with games that don't use trophies
|
Which means 95% of games are unplayable atm because sony made it manditory that all games have trophies
EDIT - updated 1st post last edited by DM at 23:21:04 01/Mar/10 |
Reports are saying that it's only affecting the original PS3s, and it doesn't matter if they've never been connected to the net before. Something to do with the date, I imagine. I don't know how they expect to roll out an update when the console doesn't connect to the internet.
|
Yeah, but what about all of those people who have never connected their PS3 to the net before? How are they even supposed to know what's happening? This is a pretty f***ed up situation for Sony to let have happen.
|
As long as they have this problem fixed before the 9th, and fixing said problem doesn't require you to send the console IN to sony i'm happy. I have some major gaming in the weeks ahead of me and plan on getting at least 150+ hours out of it
|
going to b very pissed off if this is a "send it back for repair" fix
|
I can confirm it's affected my original 40GB PS3 (came free with my 40" Bravia during Christmass 2008). My clock was reset to 1/1/2000. Funnily enough, I had the Heavy Rain demo paused in the Download Manager and it resumed fine without me signing in to PSN.
|
fail, console restarted itself over night and it f***ed up... really lame.
|
Well at least they know what the problem is and should have it fixed by tomorrow. This means no recall which was the biggest issue with a fix. Glad it'll be working by the 9th.
What sucks is they are saying that certain data may not be recoverable If you used your PS3 during the lockdown that is last edited by DM at 10:25:46 02/Mar/10 |
Thats the reason I bought my PS3 years ago. I've ripped on it a lot but bugger it I need to buy it. Even if it's a bad rpg it's still going to be better than any western RPG to come out lately... with the exception of Dragon Age
EDIT - Apparantly the fatties are back up and running again! (lol) Not gonna test till I get my controller in the mail today but this is good news if true! last edited by DM at 10:50:07 02/Mar/10 |
i havnt used my ps3 in ages, turned it on yesterday morning to get some new demos and bam! ruined :(
|
work now... had to restart.. but auto corrected date and time and works a charm.
|
Controller arrived and mine has fixed itself so seems it was a temporary bug since sony havn't released any official word on the fix they were working on. All safe now for another 4 years it seems
|
I'm going to buy FF13 on 360 I think, just to celebrate the glory of non-exclusivity.
|
Ditto khel, cannot wait. Although i've been considering buying one of late tbh, but i've already got a blu-ray player and a 360 + PC. Only thing that still interests me is Heavy Rain.
|
I ordered it on PS3 mainly just because I won't have to worry about disc-swaps. I admit though, I was pretty keen to get it on 360 for the same reason. I hope the 360 version sells well, which it probably will.
|
Disc swaps don't worry me. Hell i didn't mind it in lost odyssey which was 4 dvd's. If you're honestly too lazy to get up after 10 hours and change a disc you should just end it.
|
Yeah funny that. A tiny programming error/oversight caused chaos for the eairly systems for around 36 hours.
|
Disc swaps don't worry me. Hell i didn't mind it in lost odyssey which was 4 dvd's. If you're honestly too lazy to get up after 10 hours and change a disc you should just end it. Swapping after 10 hours is fine.. its when you get games like mass effect 2 where you can end up swapping discs an hour apart depending on how you play the game... Also 360vsPS3 pics of ff13 have been released and they show ps3 looking far clearer. |
Yeah side by side there isn't a LOT of difference like most would like to claim. They are both equally fine looking but the PS3 has that little bit of an edge with things looking clearer, a tiny bit less choppy and IMO a tad more colourful. Whatever floats your boat though.
|
I read the thread title as:
FS - PS3 Global Lockdown. I was like well that's just not a very good deal now is it? |
Disc swaps don't worry me. Hell i didn't mind it in lost odyssey which was 4 dvd's. If you're honestly too lazy to get up after 10 hours and change a disc you should just end it. They don't worry me either, but if it were between having it all on one disc or 3 discs, what's so wrong about going with the former? It's not like there's any advantages to the 360 version. |
doesnt the 360 version of ff13 have less pretty graphics? also i read theres like 5-6gb install for each disc on the 360.
anyway i preordered the limited edition version for ps3 today, as well as the guide. last edited by ravn0s at 17:23:56 02/Mar/10 |
Installing the discs on 360 is optional, you can install any disc on 360, which basically just copies it to the hard drive and runs it off the hard drive.
Has anyone got a link to a good quality, reputable video showing the two running side by side? So far all the ones I've found are home-made or made by fanboys and altered to make their version of choice look obviously better. I'm sure in cutscenes the PS3 prolly looks a bit better because its 1080p vs 720p on the 360, but when I'm sitting 3 or 4 metres away from my tv playing it, I figure I'm probably not going to even notice. last edited by Khel at 17:33:52 02/Mar/10 |
ffxiii from jackofallgames.co.uk for under $50 delivered
|
Right now my guess would be that both systems will just as good as the other fps wise. The PS3 will be a tiny bit better look but not by much and will be pretty much unnoticable from a distance. I don't think there are any high quality comparisons out right now since no one has a review copy.
Only thing i'm wondering... The xbox discs are said to be around 8.6gb yeah? Well 8.6gb x 3 is 25.8gb. Not bad considering its a 60 hour game. All other games should take note of this. AvP i'm looking at you. under 5 hours and nearly as big... shame you on. Anyway The PS3 version is said to be 38gb. We seem to be missing around 12gb size wise. Where has this gone? Does it mean the 360 will have much less in the way of sound/video quality? Who knows yet. Eagerly awaiting some official place to review the english version. |
i would say the 12gb is the 1080p cutscenes
|
This nice gentleman explains the issue in a very articulate manner.
|
Textures and sound might use more compression on the 360 version as well, I know in the past games that are exclusive for PS3 and have all that extra blu-ray space to play around with (MGS4 springs to mind) use more uncompressed assets, just cos they can (and I guess it might give them some minimal performance benefits).
So yeah, PS3 version might be a bit sharper, but in the real world, I doubt it'll be noticeable. Edit: Holy s***, the guy in ET's video is like Baron Harkonnen. |
Another RPG that seems to be monster hunter-esqe is White Knight Chronicals. I've ordered that and will arrive on thursday so we'll see how that goes. Despite many, MANY bad reviews by websites, is getting rather high marks from nearly every other person who tries it. Odd that websites don't like it while most love it.
Online mode seems to be the star attraction to it. Along the single player story you pick up items, parts and even people to live in your "town". You set this up how you like it and once you're ready, you can take it online. Now your town turns into a quest hub and other people can come and visit, buy your stuff that your town makes and you can group together to go on hunts much like in the MH series. People have said that while the single player game lasts between 20 and 30 hours, the online mode can last up to around 400 if you want to get every trophy. last edited by DM at 00:46:09 03/Mar/10 |

The biggest difference being the jaggy hair and washed out co lours on the 360... sure it might not be enough for you to give a f***... But for my fiance who is a hardcore fan (this b**** has Final Fantasy Tattoo's) its a massive difference... in the event you have both consoles.. wouldn't you want to buy the version that is the best looking. (no doubt we will end up with it for 360 and ps3 though.. why... so we can play it at the same time in different rooms so we don't spoil it for each other... yep.) |
Also note, that that comparison could be rigg'ed, you could probably get those washed out colours by f*****g with the display settings..
|
Yeah, thats what I mean, I haven't seen a comparison yet that I really trust, and I want to see it as a video, cos sure you can sit there and stare at a single frame and pull it apart but when s*** is flying around at a million miles an hour on screen, are you going to notice?
|
They don't worry me either, but if it were between having it all on one disc or 3 discs, what's so wrong about going with the former? It's not like there's any advantages to the 360 version.not disagreeing with you. If i had a Ps3 i would buy it on that for the lossless audio and 1080p cinematics. I was just trying to say it isn't that bad having to swap discs in my opinion. I doubt it will fall into mass effect 2's problems because ffx13, according to reviews, is a fairly linear game. |
lol nice vid E.T.
I feel like this guy after watching that: http://img155.imageshack.us/img155/7918/1in4.png |
the 360 version looks horrible if thats a legit comparison.
|
heh the 360 version is already available online
|
360 looks horrible compared to ps3
|
heh the 360 version is already available online yeah noticed that today, ill wait for my ps3 copy so i dont have to put up with the jaggy edges. |
Glad I ordered the PS3 version, by the looks of things. Looks like the PS3 has some anti-aliasing. Not that the 360 version looks bad, just not quite as nice as the PS3. I would imagine that's more to do with the PS3 being the lead development platform, rather than an issue with the 360 hardware.
|
Wow if that is the real difference between the 2 version, why the s*** wouldn't you buy the PS3 version if you had both systems? The s***** job on Snow's hair for the 360 version reminds me of the HORRIBLE f*****g shadows on GTA4 for the PC. It looks like the PS3 is running in a higher res than what the 360 is. Got my collector's edition pre-ordered today. Looking forward to tuesday!
|
here's some IGN geeks shedding some light:
.... and here is teh funneh |
Is that like a PS3 in hi-def compared to a 360 in standard def or something? Either that or square really dropped the ball on the port to 360, whats with all the aliasing?
Oh, and I'm talking about Mantorok's post btw, since theres not really anything I can quote to make that apparent... |
I personally feel they shouldn't of released it on the 360 at all... could of boosted sales and interest in the ps3.. and they wouldn't of had the game leaked 4 days early online.
|
Yeah 360 was kind of a bad move IMO. Should of kept it exclusive to PS3 to boost sales and interest in the console. They want to share the fun. Too bad microsoft doesn't feel the same way about their games.
|
I think it's fantastic that it's multi-platform. There are more people out there with 360s than PS3s, and this allows more people to enjoy the game, and Square-Enix to earn back more of their money. I really don't see a downside to it being multi-platform.
|
I'm all for them doing a multi platform release in order to widen the audience... but if i was the developer i wouldn't do it at the cost of a loss of quality on one platform.
But i totally get the fact that its a business they run and at the end of the day all the need to do is make a game people enjoy. |
I'm all for them doing a multi platform release in order to widen the audience... but if i was the developer i wouldn't do it at the cost of a loss of quality on one platform. The 360 version *should* look a lot better though right? Multi-platform probably = more $$ regardless of people saying "eww it looks funny on that one". |
The 360 version *should* look a lot better though right? I kinda hope not. Every since it's been announced that ff13 was a dual console release the 360 fanboys have been ragging on the PS3'ers that they get the game too and for us to suck random body parts. Would be funny if we could say "enjoy your s***** looking game" Either way it's going to be a raging success I bet for both consoles. |
Should of kept it exclusive to PS3 to boost sales and interest in the consoleWhy would square give a f*** about interest in the ps3? All they care about is interest in their games. |
square just realised that they need to get bigger in the western market to survive. best way to do that is to release multiplatform games.
|
Why would square give a f*** about interest in the ps3? All they care about is interest in their games. Because ever since the Snes bit the dust, the majority of their games has been for the playstation range. I don't mind them moving to the 360 really. I just think FF13 would of been THE game to help sell the PS3 since it's kinda obvious they favour it. Maybe however that's just due to japanese sony and japanese square-enix. Anyway as long as they keep making these awesome rpgs i'm bloody happy for whatever console they make it on. If the above pictures are right though it seems they will favor the PS3 over the xbox though. |
FF13 would of been THE game to help sell the PS3And once again why would square care, keep in mind they are a business not a fanboy. |
I just think FF13 would of been THE game to help sell the PS3 since it's kinda obvious they favour it. it did in japan where its ps3 only. |
And once again why would square care I guess they wouldn't really. They'd go with whatever console is the most popular. Which has happened to be the playstation 1 and 2. Also the people who have been downloading the leaked 360 version are being banned during their gameplay which I find very funny. |
And once again why would square care, keep in mind they are a business not a fanboy. Your right.. they shouldn't of cared... sony should of and possibly done more to prevent it. |
And then the people who say things like
They want to share the fun. Too bad microsoft doesn't feel the same way about their games.would have patted sony on the back for securing exclusivity. |
