Which is an alarmingly high number of free copies of a game to giveaway. But hey, it probably means that if you head to the Payday 2 store page today you're pretty much guaranteed a copy. Payday 2, which sees up to four players re-enact the intro to The Dark Knight as they go on a crime spree throughout Washington DC, has been quite the success for publisher Starbreeze and developer Overkill Software.

In the recent developer update below we also get confirmation that this free copy of Payday 2 will also translate into a free copy of the VR update coming later this year.

In addition to that a Nintendo Switch version of Payday 2 is in the works, and an Ultimate Edition is planned for PC that will basically combine all the DLC into one neat package. With Payday 2 currently free, all DLC has currently been taken off Steam to pave the way for the upcoming Ultimate Edition -- where all future content after that will be free.

Announced via a community stream earlier today, Payday VR is a virtual reality version of the popular heist game that will be available to all Payday 2 owners. A beta for the new mode is expected later this year, which will also allow for VR players to team up with non-VR players as they rob jewelry stores and banks. A new video showcasing the mode has also been released, and yeah, it looks pretty cool.

Stealing jewels and shooting your way our of a robbery gone bad is hard to make not look cool. And in VR it certainly looks like it could be a lot of fun.

As per the video we can see it running on HTC Vive, but as of yet no other platforms have been officially announced.

The developers behind frenetically paced kill-kill-kill action game Hotline: Miami have teamed up with the folks behind Payday 2 to create a new DLC pack for the heist shooter, the studios announced today.

Sadly not much else is known about the themed DLC, though Payday 2 developer Overkill has noted on the Steam announcement that we can expect at the very least a new Heist mission. The DLC has also been dated for September 30th, so expect more news on what theme has in store for Payday 2 closer to the release. For now, enjoy this poster and the teaser video below.

Developer Overkill Software has unveiled their latest add-on pack for bank robbing title Payday 2, however this time with a little bit of a creative twist.

Titled the Gage Assault Pack, the DLC is taking a leaflet out of DICE's Battlefield series with its quite tongue-in-cheek artstyle of orange and blues so typical of Battlefield 3 and 4. The pack is a collection of four weapons, 28 mods, four melee weapons, four masks, four materials, four patterns and 10 achievements, all for $4.99 and due for release this Thursday.

Overkill confirmed the artistic nod to DICE on their Steam page, noting that "Yes, this is us at Overkill tipping our hats to a fellow Swedish game developer. :)" According to fictional arms-dealer, Gage, the pack is for when go south and you want to "fill the air with high velocity rifle rounds, and plenty of them."

Payday 2 has revealed a new trailer today featuring Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito, focusing on their upcoming DLC "The Big Bank Heist," set to add a new mission, a "pre-planning" feature and new masks.

Clocking in at just under nine minutes, the video features a lot of live action sequences including one of the game's characters in the flesh as he makes a routine trip to get his teeth checked out. Sadly it seems his dentist, played by Esposito, has some other more interesting plans for him.

A new splash page on the official website has now gone live, dating the DLC for June 17th. It also teases a look at the content during E3 2014 next week, stating "visit us at E3 and be the first to break the big bank." We'll have more on the event next week so stay tuned to AusGamers.

Designed as a four player co-op game, PayDay 2 adds a new level of polish and much more to the multiplayer first-person heist genre (everything is a genre now right?). In today's review, PC shooter buff Bennet "GunSlingerAUS" Ring joins some friends as career criminals and has a few nice things to say:
When things go right and you’re walking out the vault with half a million in unmarked currency, not a cop in sight, Payday 2 is one of the most satisfying co-op games of all time. Yet even when your plans explode in a mess of buckshot and tear gas, it delivers a level of co-op excitement that is hard to find. Sure, there are a few rough edges in the form of crime.net and the weapon mod systems, and the lack of content won’t help it’s longevity. But at the end of the day this budget title delivers an experience that betters many of its full-priced competitors, and with a year’s worth of DLC in the pipeline, Payday 2 will keep your career as a criminal going for quite some time. Well, at least until somebody complains to the Classification office and gets it banned in Australia…
Get the full low-down in this in-depth PayDay 2 review.
