Can it run Crysis 3? Here's your answer: Crytek has detailed the target specifications for their upcoming PC melter, flagging the current top-of-the-line GeForce GTX 680 and Radeon HD7970 for maximum graphics, and setting the bar for entry at 1GB graphics cards with DirectX 11 support (thanks VG247):
Minimum System Operating Requirements for PC:
  • Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8
  • DirectX 11 graphics card with 1Gb Video RAM
  • Dual core CPU
  • 2GB Memory (3GB on Vista)
  • Example 1 (Nvidia/Intel):
  • Nvidia GTS 450
  • Intel Core2 Duo 2.4 Ghz (E6600)
  • Example 2 (AMD):
  • AMD Radeon HD5770
  • AMD Athlon64 X2 2.7 Ghz (5200+)
Recommended System Operating Requirements for PC:
  • Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8
  • DirectX 11 graphics card with 1GB Video RAM
  • Quad core GPU
  • 4GB Memory
  • Example 1 (Nvidia/Intel):
  • Nvidia GTX 560
  • Intel Core i3-530
  • Example 2 (AMD):
  • AMD Radeon HD5870
  • AMD Phenom II X2 565
Hi-Performance PC Specifications:
  • Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8
  • Latest DirectX 11 graphics card
  • Latest quad core CPU
  • 8GB Memory
  • Example 1 (Nvidia/Intel):
  • NVidia GTX 680
  • Intel Core i7-2600k
  • Example 2 (AMD):
  • AMD Radeon HD7970
  • AMD Bulldozer FX4150
Points of note are the confirmation of no Windows XP support, and DirectX 11 capability being mandatory --although whether this means the game won't have a DirectX 9 mode at all is not clarified.

Crysis 3 is due on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 in February 2013.

might seem like a silly question, but can any of the consoles run DX11?, if they can't it doesn't seem unreasonable to think there will be a DX 9 mode

Consoles can't no. But I think there's only a handful of PC graphics cards that perform above that min-spec that don't support DX11, so perhaps they just simplified things by cutting it off there.

ie: if you have a 200 series GeForce, maybe they figured you couldn't suitably run the game anyway, DX9 or not.

I'm in between the recommended and high specs, but the multiplayer beta ran like utter s*** at max settings on my PC. My CPU is pretty old though, that's probably a big part of it.

The latest Steam hardware survey had DX11 GPUs in 53.14% of systems, and XP was installed on less than 12% of systems. It's about time developers ditched DX9 and XP.

When I bought my computer Crysis 1 had just come out and I could barely play it on max settings. Since 2007 I have replaced the motherboard, PSU, a few HDDs, upgraded my graphics card 4 times and quadrupled my RAM. Except for my RAM I am only one step up in each minimum requirement for Crysis 3.

GTX 460 (Originally an 8600)
8 GB RAM

The only thing original is the case and CPU. I must get a new rig ASAP!

my PC still can't handle crysis 1. It's just a s***** coded game.

Crysis ran alright on my PC at the time, not ultra but medium. If s*** code is still s*** it should run poorly on my current system. I should try it for something to do.

lol@ requirements.
"We dont know what the latest DX11 card is, but you need it for our game" They MIGHT want to specify it being a gamers wet dream card because I am sure the M variants are new and do DX11, if poorly.

The f*** you talking about, did you even read all the words? They gave two examples of the kind of cards they were referring to at each of three different levels, that's more than you normally get for new games.

Um, except for your poor grammar let me respond.

DX11 has been supported in NVIDIA since what like the 200series.

We're now up to the 600 series. So that's a good 4 generations of cards. The 200 series came out in 2008, so literally 5 years worth of cards to choose from. If you want to run Crysis 3 on a computer older than 5 years old you're going to have more problems than direct x 11 support.

Like the fact that you're stupid, that kind of problem.

Because you wanted a M variant that would do it, here's a 1200 dollar laptop to play your crysis 3 and pretty much any modern game.

It's not exactly breaking the budget as far as computers go hey.

I couldn't play the alpha smoothly maxed out. But close to and it looked great. I really couldn't see the difference between what I was running it and the max.

@copuis - no consoles can't do DX11. However earlier in the year the Crytek people were talking about how they've been doing a lot of custom coding to try and replicate DX11 looking effects on consoles and getting some good results. So I think the DX11 version is the main version, they're then trying to cheat that on consoles where they can.

@Whoop
There were some code issues with Crysis 1. Improved in Warhead, generally though it's because they were doing stuff so ahead of the time, no one had experience with doing it.

I took a bunch of screenshots of Far Cry 3 in DX11, and then a bunch of the same shots in DX9 and I cannot tell the difference.

There's probably not that much dx11 stuff implemented in FC3 because of consoles.

I know in Crysis 1. You definitely could see a difference between Dx9 and DX10.

Crysis 2 with DX11 you really just saw features only in dx11 like tessellation.

remember that crysis actually crippled the dx9 features so dx10 would look better. When people added in a few dx9 fixes it looked pretty much identical to the dx10 version.
