Got my ass dragged to see this thing. Let me ruin it for you. It is EXACTLY the same premise as the epic Battle Royale however it mixes things up by being worse in every measureable way.
Deaths in the movie: several. Deaths in the movie that I gave a s*** about: zero Deaths in the movie that are awesome to watch: zero, pg piece of s***. In conclusion The Hunger Games is for homosexual men and women. 1 star. |
it's at 86% on rotten tomatoes. seems there's a lot of people that disagree with you.
i enjoyed the books for what they were. will probably wait to see this on bluray. |
Sick of the publicity for this its everywhere on the net, stories on the stars.
Overhyped movies tend to be poor. Apparantly that disney movie John Carter is shaping up as the most expensive flop in history. Disney had plans for sequels and have built a theme ride in anticipation of it being a monster hit. |
Off topic: 21 Jump Street is alot better than what I thought it would be
|
I didn't mind it. It's certainty not as bad as you describe, but it has certainly has been over hyped.
I just found it was a reasonable popcorn movie. GO in with no expectations and you will probably enjoy it. Go in expecting to see a blood bath or something extraordinary and you will be disappointed. |
21 jump street was all kinds of awesome imo
doubt I'll go see the hunger games.... |
When you say Battle Royale you mean the japanese movie? Because that was pretty damn cool I thought.
|
I thought it was a great movie. The only thing I didn't like was your #3.
They didn't really show any of the deaths, swords swinging and they cut to a little bit of blood splatter on the box beside it instead. Even when the wild dogs come out, ripping into flesh, you don't see any blood... cant even see the body they're mauling, just the back of a black dog. Lame. It's like they made it for the Australian Gaming Market, and had to cut out all the good bits in order to release it here. |
Off topic: 21 Jump Street is alot better than what I thought it would be Agreed. Saw trailers and thought meh. Laughed out loud all throughout the movie. Average story but lols were good. Deaths in the movie that are awesome to watch: zero, pg piece of s***. Good enough reason for me. Looked girly s*** anyway. |
Went and saw it last night, and I have to fully disagree with you. It was a good film, not omg awesome, and not as gory as one like yourself seems to want/expected. By the sounds of it you just seemed to hate it and have a bad experience because you were "dragged" along.
The deaths were significant when they needed to be. They didn't need to be over the top, bodies blowing up and people getting stabbed, it wasn't meant to be about that. |
Yeah, I just saw it and quite enjoyed it. Didn't really go in with any expectations cos I haven't read the books or anything, but I thought it was pretty good.
I haven't seen that japanese Battle Royale movie, but I don't think this is really trying to copy it, since it was just as much about the districts and the corrupt, decadent society and setting it up for them to rise up and start a new rebellion and stuff. I'd assume thats what sequels are about anyway, given the way it ends. |
They didn't need to be over the top, bodies blowing up and people getting stabbed Not sure why but when violence isnt MA or R rated, i often dont like it. Apart from a few exceptions (avatar, die hard, predator, aliens come to mind) i find M rated violence lacking, especially when if the violence was real it would be brutal. Lord of the rings is an example of where i found the M rated violence lacking. I mean if you're gunna get hacked to death with a sword/axe/whatever, its gunna be graphic and i think its lame not to show it. I know M appeals to a wider audience but to me i find it lacks realism. Maybe im too used to violent video games and movies but thats a key deciding factor in whether or not i pay to see an action movie @ the cinemas. MA, good chance; M, not likely. Im not some kind of violence addict either, i thoroughly enjoy horror movies and suspense movies that dont even need to have violence to be enjoyable. |
batte royale is one of my favourite movies.
will probably get around to watching this rip off at some point. |
like twilight was not a POS, but it still made heaps because teenage girls and those that want to make teenage girls happy went anyway. it was crap as i expect this will be. sure as hell wont pay to see it thats for sure.
|
i actually quite enjoyed it. jennifer lawrence was a great leading lady. no, there was bugger all graphic violence, but that didn't surprise me as the books were written for the young adult market, and therefore they wouldn't cut their demographic out by making it too hardcore. however, this aside, i enjoyed it enough to read the books.
that said, i wouldn't mind if they released a directors cut MA15+ version. |
that said, i wouldn't mind if they released a directors cut MA15+ version. I reckon many movies should have a more mature version that is more graphic/violent etc. Surely its not too hard to film a 2 versions of a fight/kill (or even just censor down a single violent version for M rating) and release on DVD or even at the cinemas but with reduced showings. That way the kiddies can see the nice version and guys can go along with their GFs and see some violence while the GF still gets a nice story. Only thing i thought avatar needed was more violence. Stunning visuals and decent story IMO but the violence was lacking. MA version and i would have been 100% happy. |
I'd assume thats what sequels are about anyway, given the way it ends. ***spoilers**** third book is pretty much all about the districts rebelling against the capitol. second book katniss and peter are forced to participate in the hunger games again. |
I thought if you won, you got riches and s***. Therefore not needing to get Government food + Your name in the bowl?
|
they don't get rich, they just become better off than most of the people in their district. they get a nice house etc. i guess they don't show that at the end of the movie?
|
They mention (on the train just after the Reaping) that they get mad monies if they win. At the end they didn't show that though, no nice new house or anything. Just the 2 winners standing in fancy clothes.
|
Love how the movie pissed off the OP so much he had to make a hate thread on Ausgamers lol.
|
Isn't the books/movie anti-violence? i.e. violence and people killing each other shouldn't be entertainment. Why would they show gory deaths?
|
Why would they show gory deaths? To show the horror of violence and why it shouldnt happen for entertainment? |
Apparently, and I only found this out from reading Wikipedia, when they win their district gets more food and more stuff and they live better, but yeah that wasn't really shown at the end of the movie. I guess they can show it at the start of the next one though.
Therefore not needing to get Government food + Your name in the bowl? I don't think their name goes back in, from what I understand (once again, just from reading wikipedia so take it all with a grain of salt) is in the second movie s*** starts getting a bit rowdy and districts are getting restless so they host another Hunger Games which is like a "best of" type one and past winners all come back to compete again. |
in the second book you find out there's a special hunger games every 25 years called the quarter quell. these games have some sort of theme and are more terrible than the usual ones.
for the first quell, the people of each district had to vote for who they wanted to compete. the second one had twice as many contestants. haymitch won that one. the third quell forced past victors to compete. since katniss was the only female to win for her district, she was automatically chosen. haymitch's name was drawn out for this one, but peter volunteered to go in his place to protect katniss. |
To show the horror of violence and why it shouldnt happen for entertainment? You're like Michael Bay or something, but instead of adding explosions to everything, you want to add gore Movie did a pretty good job of getting the point across imo, without having to show gory deaths. The fact that 16 year old kids were butchering each other with machettes and the crowd was loving it was disturbing and brutal enough to get the point accross, adding gore wouldn't really have achieved anything, wasn't really that sort of movie |
there really wasn't all that much gore in the first book. there's plenty in the second and third though.
|
I tried reading a synopsis of the third book on wikipedia but it just sounded extremely confusing and made no sense
|
You're like Michael Bay or something, but instead of adding explosions to everything, you want to add gore Hell yeah. MOAR VIOLENCE/GORE! Im all for explosions too but not when they are stupidly over the top. I swear ive been desensitised by games/movies to violence as the tamer stuff in M rated TV shows/movies just doesnt cut it. For example - some dude shoots himself in the head and instead of a nice gory closeup, they show a wideshot or even worse, just a simple blood splash on the wall. Lame. Gimme blood, giblets and exit wounds. |
i c wat u did thar. |
Saw it last night, I found it very slow and some scenes dragged on abit too long.
|
Is anyone else wondering where the hell this EPIC MOST AWESOME TRILOGY BOOKS AND MOVIES AND THINGS came from? To me it just seems like it appeared in the last fortnight..
I'm old. |
Yeah, you're not alone TicMan, I hadn't even heard of the books till all the hype started for the movie, and apparently they've sold millions and gazillions of copies and are like the highest selling books ever on Amazon's kindle and all sorts of s***.
We're so out of touch with whats cool these days :( |
We're not out of touch Khel & TicMan, we read epic novels and watch manly shows aka Game Of Thrones, this 'Hunger Games' is a kids book. I never heard of it either so I must be old and I'm only 26
|
Yeah well I just saw it and am half a year late and frikkin loved it. So long as I don't think about the setting too hard...
Tbh at no point did I think "This needs more gore", and I love my Rome and Spartacus and whatnot. |
I watched it tonight too Nerfy. I thought it was alright. I didn't understand why it got all the hype though.
|
i saw it last week and really enjoyed it. they did a really good job adapting it from the book.
|
I watched this the other night. I enjoyed it but it wasn't as good as I thought it'd be given the reviews/hype.
Didn't anyone else feel that it was quite choppy? Almost like in the editing they cut bits together without much in-between. I then read the plot summaries of the next two books on wikipedia, and it feels pretty messy/sloppy plot wise. Worth reading the books? |
It was definitely fast moving, but I liked that, didn't feel at all dragged out.
I was under the impression that it had really bad reviews, so had low expectations, thankfully. |
aw man, i actually liked that movie, hope they still go ahead and release the sequels |
I then read the plot summaries of the next two books on wikipedia, and it feels pretty messy/sloppy plot wise. the series is good as a whole. the third book is probably the worst because the writer makes katniss really unlikeable and annoying. the second book has a quarter quell hunger games that has winners from previous games competing. how the arena is set out for the quell is kind of cool. very deadly. they're quick and easy reads, but probably only worth reading if you have nothing else to do. |
since we're all having a f*****g thread reunion I can contribtue by saying this thread made me go watch Battle Royale and I liked it and I think about it sometimes and I still have no desire to see Hunger Games.
|
The book series was absolute s***. It didn't seem to bad when it started off. But probably about 1/2 way through the first book I figured they f*****g terrible...oh well. I had downloaded them already so I read all 3. They get significantly worse as the story arc continues. By book 3 you hate the author, you hate the characters. That's my book review :) |
Several hours since seeing that movie I am beginning to disbelieve that the plot could have made any sense at all, yet it seemed to at the time. >_>
|
The Hunger Games i saw that movie. a barbed wire enema would have been more interesting. |
I watched this Wednesday night, and was very underwhelmed. I enjoyed John Carter way more and its was called one of the most expensive flops ever
|
I watched this last night. It was boarderline ok
The shakey cam was annoying. Too many scenes where they are jumping all around It's usually annoying in action scenes, but in this movie they did it all the time. Even at the start where there was no action. in what should be one shot of a person sitting on their rocking chair on the porch, they show a close up of the porch, jump to the person, jump to a close up of the flowerpot, all from the position that could have been one frame if they just zoomed out a fraction. it's stupid cinematography. it hurts my head. i'm too old. Same with the scene with a girl on the bed. all those intro scenes were done like that. It's bad bad bad. |
Yeah, I dunno why John Carter flopped, I thought it was pretty good. And while I thought the Hunger Games was decent, I agree, I enjoyed John Carter way more.
|
Tbh half of what I liked about the hunger games was probably that I'd seen zero previews and only knew that it involved a death match, but not between who or how.
Will give john carter a go. |
Yeah. I enjoyed Piranha 3DD more. F*** yeah. Didnt realise the sequel was out. The first was a decent for gore and nudity and i loved the porn star cameos. I hope #2 is just as good. As for hunger games i havent seen it yet but dont expect much. Im all for gore and violence and dont expect hunger games to really offer anything considering its rating and audience. Ill still watch it and john carter just so i know what they are like. |
i watched battleship. it was corny as hell but surprisingly enjoyable.
|
John Carter started off terrible until Julius Caesar and Marc Antony from Rome showed up together as essentially the same roles, holy s***.

I watched Battleship last night. It actually wasn't bad.
Watched Hunger Games today. Wasn't terrible, but holy crap that's a horrible concept (as a moral thing, not as a movie). Also watch The Dictator. So very, very wrong, but funny. Watching Too big to fail now. It's a lot like Margin Call. |
i watched dictator today. was better than i expected.
i thought the funniest part of the movie was at the start with Doctor: [Aladeen rewrote the language so his name means both "positive" and "negative"] Do you want the Aladeen news or the Aladeen news? the patients reactions cracked me up. last edited by ravn0s at 22:36:10 11/Aug/12 |
Could not finish John Carter. Tried, but was in physical pain. :/
|
The shakey cam was annoying. Too many scenes where they are jumping all around It's like movie makers have gone backwards. They spend all that money developing steadycams only to throw them out for this shaky cam s***. I should disable IS on my camera & run around like an idiot in the woods, who knows maybe I'll get an oscar or an emmy or whatever. Can't do any worse than 90% of modern films. |
I hate shaky cam, but I thought that they only really did it in scenes where people were nervous (sort of conveying that they weren't really focused..).
/super deep analysis of my edit: linux isos. |
I enjoyed Hunger Games, I thought it was pretty decent - leaving the cinema and having not read the books, I wondered where they could take it with a sequel as they kinda jammed the whole battle royale style "Hunger Games" dealio into the first. Anyway, should be interesting to see what they come up with.
I also enjoyed Battleship. I tried to watch John Carter, my first attempt got me 10 minutes in before turning it off, no lie. The bit where these three old dudes descend from the clouds into a floating butterfly ship to give this wanker some celestial weapon... a bit too much fantasy hocus pocus for me. But due to some uncontrollable circumstances, I recently watched the whole thing and it all kinda came together imo.. I quite liked it. |
Anyway, should be interesting to see what they come up with. they don't have to come up with anything since there's 2 more books in the series. i don't mind shaky cams during action scenes. it makes it more lively imo. the shaky cam at the beginning of hunger games was kind of stupid though. |
Saw this movie last night, completely agree with OP.
|
I watched Hunger games and Battleship on the weekend. To say those films were awful is an understatement.
Nothing happened in hunger games at all. Battleship was so corny and poorly made it was astounding. If you like both of these movies you have poor taste in everything and probably enjoy fireworks. |
I watched Hunger games and Battleship as well on the weekend. And no, it wasn't with dirtyape.
Hunger games took forever to get somewhere decent then it didn't even become decent. I assume there's going to be a second film? Battleship was atrocious and the moment thunderstruck started playing is the moment I almost took my eyes out and chopped my ears off. |
I feel sorry for people who can't switch their brains off and enjoy b-grade corny movies, cos that can be a lot of fun. I enjoyed Battleship for what it was; mindless, corny, b-grade fun. Some bits were so bad they were laughable, but thats half the fun!
|
Khel, the thunerstruck moment was as corny as you can get. How bad was it when you see these old bastards start walking down the ship being made out to be these huge strong guys.. ahah
|
haha i thought exactly this when i watched 5min of it the other night and turned it off. How awesome did they make it look in hte trailers compared to how s*** it was
|
Khel, the thunerstruck moment was as corny as you can get Yeah, it was super corny, but I just found it hilarious rather than it turning me off the movie. I'm sure it wasn't intended to be hilarious, but it was comedy gold, it was like it parodying itself (even though I'm sure it wasn't). I got a real Crysis vibe in parts of the movie, I dunno if that was just me, but it felt like they were seriously ripping off Crysis at times to me. |
The aliens while on the oahu island(Kauloa Ranch) had crysis written all over it.
|
Havent seen battleship yet but from the trailers i thought there was a big resemblance to crysis aliens.
|
I feel sorry for people who can't switch their brains off and enjoy b-grade corny movies, cos that can be a lot of fun. I enjoyed Battleship for what it was; mindless, corny, b-grade fun. Some bits were so bad they were laughable, but thats half the fun! I get s***** when I pay for it. If it's on TV or Torrents then I don't get so picky. But if I pay $15 to sit through something like Snow White... I will s*** all over it to anyone that wll lend me their ear. |

Some bits were so bad they were laughable, but thats half the fun! I tend to agree with Khel, I enjoyed Hunger Games alot more than most people in this thread purely because I went into it not knowing a single thing about the story line, it wasn't hyped up for me at all. I really enjoyed it for an hour or so in front of the tv. Battleship I watched late one night just to fill an hour or so before sleep. No complaints - enjoyed the movie for what it was. |
fwiw if you like terrible movies 'ironically' or whatever you still have horrible taste in movies.
|
I got a real Crysis vibe in parts of the movie, I dunno if that was just me, but it felt like they were seriously ripping off Crysis at times to me. Yeah, there's a lot of rumours it started off as a crysis movie, but they didn't get the rights or something. |

Some bits were so bad they were laughable, but thats half the fun! I struggle with this. I wish i could switch off and enjoy s***** movies but i often just cant do so. Watched human centipede last night and am part way thru pirnaha 3DD and both have made me cringe due to numerous flaws. Im certainly no movie critic but some s*** just really erks me. |
Rumored for some time, the third chapter of the The Hunger Games trilogy is officially set to be split into two films. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 will be released on November 21, 2014 with The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 arriving on November 20, 2015.
The first sequel, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, is already set for November 22, 2013 and features the return of Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Toby Jones and Woody Harrelson with new roles just announced for Jena Malone and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Francis Lawrence will direct The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, though there's no confirmation yet on whether or not he'll helm the Mockingjay adaptations as well. |
