Late last month we highlighted the odd situation PS5 owners would find themselves in where upgrading their console's storage is concerned, after Sony broke down SSD requirements for its powerful console.

Today, SSD specialist, WD_Black, has confirmed its SN850 NVMe SSD, with Heatsink, is one of the likely few cards compatible with Sony's recommendations for the PC-like upgrade.

In a statement following Sony's release on requirements, WD_Black offered the following:
Based on Sony’s published requirements, we can confirm our WD_BLACK SN850 NVMe SSD with Heatsink (500GB-2TB) meets the stated requirements to expand console storage on the PlayStation 5 for those with access to the PlayStation 5 Beta software.
You can check out the SN850's official online home for more here, but here's a quick breakdown:
  • Up to 7000MB/s read speed and 5300MB/s write speed
  • Supreme PCIe® Gen4 technology so you don’t lag out on the next generation of games
  • Up to 2TB capacity so you still have room for the next big title.
  • Fully customisable RGB lighting
Short of having a unit to test ourselves, we've looked at WD_Black storage solutions in the past (here and here) and also use them in our own personal setups, and can't speak more highly of the quality you get. So if you were a bit worried about that Sony announcement, at least know a reputable brand has put its hand up to say "we're good to go, Sony fanpeeps!".

Pricing (as mentioned in our OG news post) for the various WD_Black options are:
  • WD_BLACK SN850 (Heatsink) 500GB - $215 AUD
  • WD_BLACK SN850 (Heatsink) 1TB - $366 AUD
  • WD_BLACK SN850 (Heatsink) 500GB - $766 AUD
