It's been a while since we've heard anything about the Warcraft movie, not since it was confirmed that at least Uwe Boll
wouldn't be getting anywhere near the director's chair.
Today, in the lead-up to this weekend's Comic-con even in the U.S., film site
Variety have confirmed that Sam Raimi (Evil Dead, Spidermand, Drag Me To Hell) is now attached to direct Warcraft, a film based on the ridiculously popular online role playing game and Blizzard fantasy series.
The plan is for Raimi to supervise development of "Warcraft" and shoot the picture after he completes work on "Spider-Man 4," which gets under way early next year for Columbia Pictures.
"Warcraft" is "emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which our studio is best known," said Warner Bros. Pictures Group president Jeff Robinov. The deal revives a long-dormant pact made by Legendary and Blizzard for a film adaptation of the game.
"At its core, 'Warcraft' is a fantastic, action-packed story," Raimi said in a statement.
Warcraft now joins Prince of Persia as another videogame property actually getting some serious big budget Hollywood treatment, let's hope at least one of them works out and breaks the (crappy) mold for game to movie conversions.

Probably 100x more back story and 'storyline' then FPS's and other such things.

Warcraft has a ridiculous amount of lore and backstory. Whether or not it's any good is debatable, but there's certainly enough there to write a movie.

The awesome, cool, made-the-Evil-Dead-movies Sam Raimi?
Or the I-made-The-Gift-and-Spider-Man-3-movies Sam Raimi?

First off is Sam Raimi. Sure he's done a few crappy movies but he's also done a lot of good ones as well. Second, it's being done thru Legendary Pictures. They've done Batman Begins, Dark Knight, 300, Watchmen, The Hangover and a heap of other hits. And lastly Chris Metzen, Blizzard Entertainment’s Senior Vice President of Creative Development will be onboard doing the story. And he's had a major influence on story and artwork with Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo.
If there's one thing I know about Blizzard, they hold their company in the highest regard and they're not about to pump out some lame-ass script to rush a movie out. Whatever they end up doing will be worth going to see.
