GameInformer is reporting that a recent layoff has occurred in the ranks of social game giant Zynga, with news that the Boston studio will be closing. The report from CEO Mark Pincus is also saying that closures for the studios in Japan and UK are being proposed alongside an what seems to be 100 staff that were let go at the Austin studio.
The report comes amidst recent bad luck with resignations, lawsuits, and a massive stock drop that has caused the business to previously let go of staff. In the report, Pincus claims that overall a 5% reduction of staff has been felt, including the shutdown of 13 older game titles. The report also details a reduction in investment to the title "The Ville".
This is the most painful part of an overall cost reduction plan that also includes significant cuts in spending on data hosting, advertising and outside services, primarily contractors.
These reductions, along with our ongoing efforts to implement more stringent budget and resource allocation around new games and partner projects, will improve our profitability and allow us to reinvest in great games and our Zynga network on web and mobile.
Pincus also goes on to claim that Zynga are still going to be pushing forward in the social gaming industry, with discussion to take place next week on the vision of the company. The full report can be
found over here, and hopefully those who have been affected are able to swiftly find new jobs.
