Blizzard's behemoth of an MMO could soon be adding a free-to-play option, according to newly discovered files within World of Warcraft's latest PTR build, Patch 6.1.

MMO-Champion has all the details, revealing that after some digging around a number of files were found that make reference to something called "Veteran Edition." It isn't clear what exactly this may be, but the edition does offer some very similar options to the current Trial Edition of the game, which has been running for quite awhile now. The Trial Edition allows players to hit level 20 without having to subscribe to the game or submit any other form of payment to Blizzard.
Don't get your hopes up that World of Warcraft is going completely free-to-play however, as the edition does include limitations such as both a level and money cap. Other limitations include how many whispers you can be sent and to who, plus the inability to sign guild charters nor Looking For Group features.
If the Veteran Edition does turn out to some form of trial or free-to-play account we could see a fair few past players dip their toes back into the Warcraft addiction pool. I know for certain that I'd have a hard time holding back, but we'll just have to wait and see.

We’ve always had this kind of weird limitation where if you’ve never played WoW we let you play as much as you want, albeit in a very restricted Starter Edition account. However, if you have ever had a subscription--but don’t currently have one--we don’t even let you log in. In 6.1 we’ll effectively revert lapsed accounts into a Starter Edition “mode”, with all of the same restrictions. The one difference being that your sub-level 20 characters will be able to join a guild if any of your other characters are still in that guild.
The label for this mode internally is “Veteran”, and those are the strings that were datamined, but it’s unlikely to be a term we use to any great degree externally. It will simply be the default state for accounts that don’t currently have an active subscription.
