With the studio's next outing the being the highly anticipated The Outer Worlds, veteran RPG house and newly acquired Xbox Game Studios first-party is hiring for a new "next-great RPG" project. Several roles in fact, with a listing for a Combat Designer mentioning "first-person melee and ranged combat" and Unreal Engine 4 experience as a plus.

You can see that and more over at LinkedIn.

Going through the job listings, it all sounds very much like another Obsidian Entertainment production. With the following responsibilities and requirements mentioned.
  • High working knowledge of RPG conventions
  • Experience working with dedicated dialogue tools for game development
  • Create and edit conversations and cinematic sequences
  • Create lip sync and facial expression animations
  • Set up camera animation and framing for gameplay and in-game cinematic sequences
  • Previous experience developing RPGs for console or PC
  • Experience developing first-person melee and ranged combat
  • Experience directly tuning the animation graphs and timing windows for attacks, blocks, branching actions, hit reactions, and other key combat animations

  • As a Microsoft first-party we can assume that this new RPG will make its way to Xbox Scarlett and PC - and probably skip PlayStation and Nintendo Switch ala The Outer Worlds.

Of course, Obsidian making a new RPG isn't exactly breaking news - but these job listings seem to hint that it could be the studio's biggest project to date.
